Specific details of GI Bill benefits can be found here.

Registration Procedures
It is the responsibility of each benefit recipient to confirm enrollment with the IU-VA office each semester, including summers. Immediately after registering for classes, stop by our office with your schedule of classes to ensure you will continue to receive monies.

Dropping and Adding Courses
You must also inform us every time you drop or add a course. This is particularly important if you drop below the minimum hours required full time student status. The Dept. of Veteran Affairs will charge interest on over payments. (The Dept. of Veteran Affairs will determine if mitigating circumstances exist in the “first instance” of withdrawal for courses totaling not more than 6 semester hours.)

Credit for Military Experience
You must take your DD214 and other certificates denoting prior schooling (including military training) to the Office of Admissions in order to obtain credit towards you degree.

Independent Study
Independent Study courses are offered through the School of Continuing Studies. The IU-VA office certifies your enrollment in these courses. Contact our office for more information.

Full-Time Status
During fall and spring semesters, full-time status is twelve hours for undergraduates and eight hours for graduate students. During first summer session, it is four hours for either graduate or undergraduate students. During second summer session, full-time status is six hours for undergraduates and four hours for graduates.

Course Enrollment
The Dept of Veteran Affairs does not penelize students for failing courses. Failed courses may be retaken with payment of benefits. Audited courses may NOT be claimed for benefit. If a course has been passed (?D-? is considered a passing grade), it may NOT be claimed again for the purpose of receiving benefits. The IU-VA must notify the Dept of Veteran Affairs when a student is academically dismissed. Educational benefits will be suspended if the student is not reinstated. When the student is reinstated, the student must provide the IU-VA office with the justification for reinstatement or benefits will cease.

Changes of Major, Address, or Dependents
Report such changes to the IU-VA office as soon as possible. We have official forms that must be completed for change of major and, for Chapter 30 recipients, changes in marital status and/or dependants. Change of address must be reported directly to the Dept of Veteran Affairs by calling 1-(888)-442-4551.

Tutoring
The Dept. of Veteran Affairs provides reimbursement for tutoring to students on Chapters 30, 32, 35, and 1606. If you are having difficulties and want to hire a tutor, come by the office and pick up proper forms for requesting reimbursement for tutoring. Maximum tutorial assistance allowed per month (for all chapters except 31) is $100. (Chapter 31 recipients must contact the IU-VA office for more information.) Tutoring benefits can be obtained up to maximum of $1200/academic career. There is no entitlement charge for the first $600. Entitlement is charged for payments beyond $600.

VA Work Study
Chapters 30, 31, 32, 35, and 1606 are eligible for VA Work Study. For more information contact the IU-VA office.
